Need for Skill India Mission:
According to the International Labour Organization (ILO), India could face a shortage of around 29 million skilled workers by 2030. Subsequently, Accenture predicted in 2019 that if India does not take timely steps, such as investing in new technologies or building industry-required skills, the skills shortage could cost the country $1.97 trillion in terms of gross domestic product (GDP) over the next decade.
Through the ‘Skill India Mission’, the Government of India aims to develop practical skills that are required for industry and hence improve the employment rate in the country.
Since its implementation, the mission has helped in increasing employment. According to data from the Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy (CMIE), the unemployment rate has come down from 9.1% in December 2020 to 4.9% in 2024.
