What is Deendayal Upadhyay Grameen Kaushalya Yojana?

Deendayal Upadhyay Grameen Kaushalya Yojana (DDU-GKY) is a government-sponsored skill development programme. It aims to provide training and employment opportunities to the youth of rural India. The programme was launched by the Ministry of Rural Development (MoRD) in 2014 and is funded by the central government.

DDU GKY, or Deendayal Upadhyay Grameen Kaushalya Yojana, is a group of initiatives of the Ministry of Rural Development, Government of India. It is a part of NRLM. It is designated as a major contributor to Prime Minister Modi’s Make in India campaign. DDUGKY is present in 27 states and three union territories and currently has 1575 projects.

Features of Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Grameen Kaushalya Yojana:

To enable the poor and marginalised people to get the benefits that are need-based and free for the rural people.

Socially disadvantaged groups such as SC/ST (50%), minorities 15% and women 33% are mandatorily included in the design of inclusive programmes.

Shifting the emphasis from training to career progression encourages job retention, career advancement, and overseas placements.

A proactive approach to building placement partnerships to provide guaranteed placements for at least 75% of trainees

Building the capacity of implementing partners through nurturing and developing the skills of new training service partners.

Eligibility for Deendayal Upadhyay Grameen Kaushalya Yojana:

i) The age of the candidates should be between 15 and 35 years.

ii) Candidates must have passed class 8th for non-ITI courses and class 10th for ITI courses.

iii) Candidates must have a rural background.

iv) The annual family income of the candidates should not exceed Rs. 1.20 lakh.

b) Preference will be given to candidates belonging to the Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, Minorities, and Below Poverty Line.

Effectiveness of Deendayal Upadhyay Grameen Kaushal Yojana:

i) Under Deendayal Upadhyay Grameen Kaushalya Yojana, private education and skill training experts will be funded to start advanced and modern, well-equipped training centres.

ii) Qualified teachers will provide computer usage, soft skills training, and other life skills.

iii) These are completely free of cost, and students will be provided with facilities like uniforms, books, etc.

iv) In the case of residential training, free accommodation is provided to all trainees, and in the case of non-residential travel expenses, one meal per training session is provided, as well as accommodation during the day to keep the trainees motivated.

i) It has played a significant role in the Atmanirbhar Bharat Mission by enhancing skills.
ii) DDUGKY helps poor rural youth by enhancing their skills with integrated farming practices and ultimately providing them with improved livelihoods.
iii) It also plays an important role in the Skill India programme of the Government of India.

What is the current status of DDU GKY?

Currently, DDU GKY is being implemented in 27 states and three union territories with a list of more than 1800 projects. More than 11 lakh candidates have been trained, and more than 6 lakh candidates have been recruited under DDU GKY.
